Kindle App Export Notes

When Amazon announced the release of the new Kindle for 2016 a couple weeks ago, one of the new features they mentioned in the press release that didn’t get much attention is the ability to export notes to email.

Announcement: Kindle Mate 1.38 released with the ability to import Kindle App notes file and a few feature updates and experience improvements. Kindle Mate is a neat tool with rich features designed to sync, organize, import & export Kindle clippings (Kindle highlights and notes) and Kindle Vocabulary Builder words. Export notes like a charm. You can access your Kindle highlights from your Kindle itself, the apps, or the web app, but none of those are particularly handy. A Helping Handtransferring your notes and highlights from your Kindle or Kindle app Just lately, I seem to have come across a number of people who have been scratching their heads, wondering how to get their notes and highlights off their Kindle/Kindle app. I cannot move my book from Personal Document to Books - there is no such option in Kindle App. There is no such option on Amazon's 'Manage Your Kindle' site too. There is no option to export all highlights. Kindle app has option to share a highlight via Facebook or Twitter, but there is no option for copy or export it.

In fact the export notes option is already enabled on Kindle ereaders. I don’t remember it being part of the last 5.8.1 update; perhaps they are rolling it out with the new Page Flip feature because that’s when I first noticed it showing up.

There are already a number of ways to export Kindle notes and highlights, but this new email option is a lot more convenient because it can be done directly from the Kindle itself.

The way it works is you get an email with a PDF copy of your notes and highlights, plus a CSV file so you can edit and reformat the notes if you want to.

To send the notes email, just open a book on your Kindle and hit the settings menu button to access the Notes list. From there you can hit the export notes button at the bottom.

This is a handy feature to have if you like reviewing the notes and highlights you’ve added to your Kindle books. It’s a definite step up from the previous method of having to deal with the Kindle’s awkwardly-formatted My Clippings file.

One of the benefits that Kindles offer is the ability to easily access and edit all the notes and highlights that you’ve added to Kindle books.

Most reading apps and ebook readers offer the ability to add text notes and highlights to ebooks, but in most cases there is no option to export those annotations to access them outside of the ebook.

Can You Export Notes From Kindle

With Kindle ereaders there are a couple different options. All notes and highlights get saved to a basic text file on the Kindle’s drive. Just plug the device into a computer with a USB cable and transfer the My Clippings.txt file. The way the file is formatted it’s hard to use, but there are some converting options listed below.

Another option is to visit your dedicated Kindle Notes & Highlights page. All the notes and highlights that you’ve ever added to any Kindle ebook appears on that page. The page isn’t directly linkable. Here’s how to find it:

Go to https://kindle.amazon.com/ and click on the “Your Highlights” link at the top of the page (you’ll have to sign in with your Amazon account first).

From there you can delete highlights, attach notes to them, jump to the location in the ebook, copy and paste, and edit text notes.
